It's All In The Bowl

Family and traditions and history. These are the important things. Creating wonderful memories. This is what my Buggy girl and I do whenever we are together. Just as my grandmother did with me.

My grandmother loved having the whole family together. She always let us kids have free rein of her clothes to play dress up. She provided cotton balls, glue and bowls of glitter to make lovely christmas decorations. She saved scraps of fabric and taught me how to sew beginning with Barbie clothes when I was 6 years old. We helped make cookies and biscuits. She and my mom made the brides maids dresses for my wedding. These memories are me.

Buggy and I started baking together when she was probably 2 years old. She loves it and so do I. Once, my step daughter (Buggy's mom) was here when I let Buggy sprinkle flour and roll out gingerbread. Of course the flour was everywhere and my SD was aghast that I was happily allowing this. "This is what it's all about" I told her. She said she never had a grandmother that did things like this with her. "Well, I guess I am very lucky then because I had a wonderful teacher."

Buggy and I were making a soft pretzel recipe the other day. Yes, lots of flour, sugar cinnamon, delicious. As Buggy was kneading the dough I realized that the bowl we were using was my grandmother's dough bowl. She used this bowl every Sunday to make biscuits.

Perhaps I should put the bowl away and keep it safe but there's a lot of love and good dough still left in that yellow bowl.

That's such a great thing to be able to share. My Mama died when I was 7 and my Grandma wasn't very active so I didn't have anyone to do those things with. What great memories and fun for you and the little ones you share all the love with.

Daisy's 'mom' here:
Those are the kind of memories you always treasure. When I was growing up, every year we all made Christmas cookies together. It was fun to make the colored icing and decorate all the different shapes!

I hope my kids will remember me as a mom who liked to do things with them. And I really hope that when I'm a grandma that I will do things with the grandkids (like you!) and not worry about the mess or inconvenience of it all. Life is short--it's great that you are making some wonderful memories for the kids. What a great Grandma you are!!

your grandma and mine sound like they could have been sisters. It's wonderful you are carrying out the tradition with your own kids.

That's so lovely!! My mom doesn't cook, much less bake, but they do go shopping together!

making memories is what it's all about. Maybe some day Buggy will use that same bowl to mix something up with her daughter or granddaughter.

I have the same kind of grandma, it's just that I'm not around her as much as I used to be since I've grown up, and have a family of my own. I cherish the memories for sure though.

She also had a bowl that she made her biscuits in which she has given to my dad. Dad has it on a shelf in the kitchen. I wished he would use it.

Reading this gave me warm fuzzies, reminding me of my own great-grandmother who always let me help her make her famous biscuits. And we always drank Tang while making them... Good memories.

Thanks for giving me this reminder today! =)

Please! You know you're going to keep using that one, I mean you've been using the same pots
& pans since the 70's so don't act like you're gonna go buy a NEW one or something.
